The Global Balance Method, developed by Dr. Richard Tan, is a system within the Balance Method of acupuncture that focuses on treating internal diseases and emotional disorders by harmonizing the whole body. It provides a framework for practitioners to design customized treatments based on meridian relationships and offers a way to address complex, multi-symptom conditions like fatigue, insomnia, depression, digestion issues, and asthma.

Dr. Richard Teh-Fu Tan’s Balance Method was developed based on classical Chinese medicine texts and meridian theory, with a strong focus on immediate and effective pain relief by balancing distal acupuncture points. Its foundation was deeply influenced by Dr. Tan’s study of the I Ching and the ancient Chinese meridian system, along with techniques drawn from various acupuncture masters and lineages.

Origin and Development of the Method

Dr. Tan, born in Taiwan, combined intensive study of classical acupuncture texts (including the Neijing and the I Ching) with hands-on clinical work across a wide range of acupuncture systems, such as those of Master Tung and Dr. Chao Chen. The central principle is that by identifying and needling distal points along balanced meridians, patients can experience immediate symptom relief without directly needling the painful area itself.Dr. Tan synthesized six key balancing systems from traditional theory, such as meridian name pairs, opposites on the Chinese clock, and interior–exterior pairings. This allowed him to simplify both the selection and application of acupuncture points. For more than 25 years, he taught and popularized the Balance Method worldwide, opening it up beyond the closed circles of tradition.

Impact on Acupuncture

The Balance Method has become a globally recognized acupuncture system, best known for rapid pain relief and effective treatment of a wide range of conditions, including internal medicine, stress, insomnia, digestive issues, and women’s health. Its accessibility and results-focused approach have led to widespread use among Western practitioners and patients, who value its immediate feedback and distal treatment strategy.Through his teachings, books, seminars, and certification programs, Dr. Tan profoundly shaped acupuncture education and clinical practice worldwide, and his system is considered one of the most influential modern innovations in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Many doctors adopt the method because of its simplicity, replicability, and minimal risk of aggravating local pain, which leads to better clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.Dr. Tan’s legacy continues through the ongoing practice and development of the Balance Method, which empowers acupuncturists and benefits countless patients around the world.

About the Global Balance Method

The Global Balance Method, developed by Dr. Richard Tan, is a system within the Balance Method that focuses on treating internal diseases and emotional disorders by harmonizing the entire body. It gives practitioners a framework for designing individualized treatments based on meridian relationships and offers a way to address complex multi-symptom conditions such as fatigue, insomnia, depression, digestive disorders, and asthma.

Key Concepts:

  • Meridian relationships: Highlights the interconnectedness of the body’s meridians and applies this knowledge to rebalance dysfunction. For instance, pain in one area can be treated by needling a corresponding meridian elsewhere, often far from the pain site.

  • Global balance: Seeks to restore harmony across the whole body rather than focusing only on localized symptoms.

  • Internal Diseases: Especially effective in addressing imbalances in internal organs and emotional disorders that present with multiple symptoms.

  • Individualized treatment: Practitioners tailor treatments to each patient’s unique symptomatology and meridian relationships.

How It Works:

  • Mirroring/Opposite techniques: Uses methods such as mirroring (e.g., treating foot pain with points on the hand) or opposite points to create balance.

  • Five Systems of Balance: Includes five balancing systems to determine meridian relationships, where Systems 1, 2, and 3 are based on I Ching theory, and Systems 4 and 5 are based on the Chinese body clock.

  • Immediate results: A hallmark of the Balance Method is the rapid symptom relief experienced during treatment.

In essence, the Global Balance Method empowers practitioners to systematically address complex internal and emotional disorders, design personalized treatments based on meridian interconnections, and restore whole-body balance for improved health and well-being.
